The mastermind of the Pulwama attack 2019, which killed over 40 CRPF personnel , Hamza Burhan was reportedly killed by unidentified gunmen in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). Hamza Burhan was a doctor by profession and a resident of PoJK. He was designated as a terrorist in 2022 under UAPA by the Union Home Ministry. His original name was Arjumand Gulzar Dar and he sustained multiple bullet injuries after he was attacked in Muzaffarabad by unidentified assailants.
Hamza Burhan was born in Kharbatpora in the Ratnipora area of Pulwama, he left for Pakistan in 2017 under the pretext of pursuing higher studies. Later, he joined the banned terror outfit Al-Badr and soon rose to the rank of commander in the outfit.
He then returned to Kashmir and was involved in radicalising youth and indoctrinating them. Burhan expanded his network from Pulwama to Shopian in South Kashmir.
According to a report, youths who came into contact with Burhan gradually slipped into militancy. Burhan had been the mastermind in the February 14, 2019 Pulwama Attack. He has been linked to several-terror related activities as well.
The Pulwama attack was one of the deadliest attacks till date on security personnel in India. It was carried out by Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM). A JeM terrorist rammed an explosives-laden car into a convoy of the CRPF at Lethpora, killing 40 personnel.
