Former Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president K. Annamalai resigned from the party. He also announced the launch of a new political movement called “We the Leaders”. He described this move as a new beginning and emphasised that he wanted to leave the party with respect.
Politics does not belong to a family. We will break the concept of permanent leaders, MPs and MLAs. We need to come out of cult politics and bring common man politics,” Annamalai said.
Annamalai was an IPS officer who served in Karnataka and quit in 2019 to run an organization called ‘We The Leaders Foundation’. After joining BJP in 2020, he later became the state president.
His aggressive campaigns against the MK Stalin government and his padyatra significantly raised the BJP’s visibility in the southern state. It was crucial for BJP as it has struggled to gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu.
In his resignation letter, Annamalai stated “disagreement” with the party leadership over its political strategy in Tamil Nadu. He said that despite being in the BJP for the past six years, he had not sacrificed his “Tamil identity”.
Annamalai belongs to the Gounder community and spoke in detail about the next phase of his oublic life and political journey.
