Iran has assured its Indian friends “to not worry” about the Strait of Hormuz when it comes to safe passage for fuel tankers. The Embassy of Iran in India said in a post on X on Thursday, “Our Indian friends are in safe hands, no worries.” Iran has been selective in allowing the passage of ships through the strait, with India being one of the very few nations whose cargo ships have been granted passage through the strategic waterway amid the current war in the Middle East. As per the current data, eight Indian-flagged carriers have safely transited through the critical energy choke point. As many as 19 ships with LPG, crude oil and LNG meant for India are currently stranded in Hormuz, officials have said.

Tehran controls the strategic Strait of Hormuz and nearly 20% of the world’s oil trade passes through this strait. India imports 60% of its energy demands and approximately 90% passes through this strait. Iranian officials have repeatedly emphasised that restrictions on the passage of ships through the strait are only for enemy nations. The disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has already pushed fuel prices higher across global markets and raised concerns over supply chain stability.
