An event that rocked the conscience of India and happened in the silent hills of Mayurbhanj district of Odisha was a nightmare. Abhimanyu Purty or AP was a 24-year-old tribal child and was lovingly referred to as AP who died a grotesque death on March 4, 2026. Members of his own family would beat him to death using iron rods and bamboo sticks and then would dispose his body in Subarnarekha River. What is all the more nauseating in this case is that the very khaki-clad individuals who purportedly should have been defending him Odisha Police members who allegedly covered the murder are the ones who were supposed to be defending him.
The ordeal of AP started because of a family quarrel over a trivial family matter. He was accused of stealing and beating by his father, uncle and brothers. With furious rage they poured out inconceivable savagery: blow after blow, which smashed his skull, and blasted off his limbs, made him lifeless. The family resorted to the local police in place of justice as a weird alliance. Fire investigation reports and eyewitness reports indicate that sub-inspector Pradip Mahanta and other Karanjia station police officers accepted bribes to conceal the murder. They had arranged a suicide situation, and had left a body of AP in the river and had afaked reports of death after death to denote that he had been drowned. Later, autopsy revealed the hoax, the murders were not caused by water but blunt force.
This is not the only betrayal of khaki. Odisha tribal belts have never spoken in high tones of police-family nexuses of atrocities. The situation of AP was brought to the fore with a thunderous voice of indignation with his mother who is suffering and bravely comes out to complain and expose the malpractice. Videos of social media activists went viral and charged CM Mohan Charan Majhi and DGP YB Khurania. Already on March 10, AP father Muna Purty, eight of his family, and three police, including Mahanta, are accused of murder and evidence theft under the IPC Sections 302, 201, and 120B.
The fallout? Many Karanjia protests called on reforms in tribal justice. The human rights organizations in the country like the NHRC came in and inquired about negligence in custody. This scandal Highlights structural malfunctions: understaffed posts, corruption in the periphery and no responsibility to those who violate the trust of the people. Family violence which is already marginalized to the Adivasi people is a twofold blow which is augmented by the apathy of the state machinery.
The arrests themselves will not prevent the death of AP. Odisha requires family murder fast-track courts, cops body cameras and whistleblower protection. The Prime Minister Modi quote on zero tolerance to corruption should come to play here. Will the khaki wash out, or will the blood of AP always remain the blot of the Indian justice system? Shouts of tribal men: no longer murdered by brothers, swindled by uniformed men.
