IMD issues heavy rainfall warning for several states

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for several states on May 13. Along with rainfall, IMD has also issued alerts for thunderstorm and heatwave. Due to an active weather disturbance and weather systems over the Bay of Bengal, strong winds, hailstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall  are expected across many regions of India.

Wind speeds may touch 70 kmph in some states, creating risks for people, crops and infrastructure.

In Bihar, thunderstorm winds may reach 50-60 kmph along with some lightening. In Delhi, Chandigarh and Haryana, rain with thunderstorms and strong winds of 40-50 kmph are is expected during the day. Whereas, rain, lightning and powerful winds between 60-70 kmph are expected in hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

In several north-eastern states, like Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, IMD has issued very heavy rainfall alert. Arunachal Pradesh may witness heavy rainfall in several districts. In Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Intense rainfall and strong winds are expected due to changing sea conditions.

In Himachal Pradesh, heavy rain may reduce visibility and damage crops. IMD has also warned of thunderstorms, rain and hail expected in isolated places of Uttarakhand.

Central and eastern India is also expected to see unstable weather conditions.Gusty winds may blow between 40-50 kmph and lightning strikes are possible in UP. Whereas, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand may see rain and lightning activity and thunderstorms with strong winds likely in several districts.
