Five BJP workers suffered serious injuries after bike-borne miscreants allegedly hurled bombs at them near St. Xavier Institution at Dutta Road of Ward No. 2 near the Panihati home of the RG Kar rape-murder victim late on Wednesday. Police have arrested three persons on the basis of CCTV footage. BJP candidate and mother of RG Kar rape-murder victim Ratna Debnath won the election from the Panihati constituency.
According to police, few BJP candidates were talking to the locals at the site of incident, when several men arrived on motorcycles. Four people were on bikes when three bombs were thrown one after another at the BJP workers, said an eyewitness. The injured were rushed to R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, where they are receiving treatment. The bombing triggered panic in the locality. Central forces were deployed to control the situation and carry out patrolling in nearby areas.
After the recent poll results with BJP winning the elections for the very first time in West Bengal, political clashes soon started to surface in Bengal. Reports of attacks, vandalism and violence involving workers from both the BJP and Trinamool Congress have emerged from several districts. Police are taking strict action against those responsible for disturbing law and order.
