Heavy rainfall lashed in Bengaluru on April 30, 2026 in the morning, breaking its all-time April 24-hour rainfall record. Seven people, including a six year old girl, were killed and nine others injured after a compound wall of Bowring Hospital collapsed during intense thunderstorms. The real question arises about what led to sudden heavy downpour in the city in April, a month that is usually hot and mostly dry in the city? Central areas saw heavy hailstorm, with hailstones piling up on roads and creating a white cover in places like MG Road, Trinity Circle, and around the Mahatma Gandhi Road Metro station.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the site and announced compensation of ₹5 lakh to the family of each victim. The deceased have been identified as Mohamad Abdul Haq, Fayaz Ahmad, KK Latha, Smita, Naseemullah, Mohd Salauddin and Musfira. Two of the victims were women from Kerala. CM said he had instructed the doctors to provide treatment free of cost.
As per experts, the heavy rainfall and hail occurred from strong convective activity which happens when rising temperatures create instability in the atmosphere. This was further exacerbated by moisture coming in and a low-level wind discontinuity, which allowed tall clouds to form quickly. Such pre-monsoon showers are normal for April.
