An earthquake of strong magnitude struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region on Friday. The tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR and several parts of North India. This triggered panic among residents in several parts of North India on Friday night including Delhi, Punjab and Haryana who rushed out of homes and office buildings. Residents in high-rise buildings said that the shaking lasted for a few seconds. Others reported that household items moved and shook. One resident from Chandigarh reported that, he felt a strong jolt which lasted for a few seconds.
Residents in several areas of Jammu and Kashmir reported feeling the tremors, though there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The quake, which occurred at a significant depth of 175 km, sent a brief wave of panic among residents. The depth allows seismic waves to travel farther distances, which explains why tremors were felt across northern India. The Afghanistan-Tajikistan border lies in a geologically active zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates interact, often resulting in seismic disturbances. Authorities are monitoring the situation and further details are expected to come out soon. So far, no immediate reports of damage to property have emerged and the epicentre of the seismic activity is yet to be ascertained.
