Pune/Beed, March 9, 2026: A gruesome marriage auction syndicate that has been based in Pune has been unraviled when a distressing suicide bid by a 21 year old woman revealed that there is a nightmare of trafficking. Beed police had apprehended four prime accused, which led to a racketeering that coerced the victim into three fake marriages and received cash payments worth more than 14 lakh in a month.
It started with the Latur native who was already married two years in Beed, being tempted by agencies offering him a better life. Rather, she turned into goods. First, her traffickers at the head of which was Mahananda of Hadapsar, Pune, sold her to a man in Katraj at ₹5 lakh. One more sale after ten days in Kurkumbh brought ₹4.5 lakh. On March 6 they insisted on a fourth union, and beat her soul.
Being kasaali (choked with exhaustion) she drank poison in Mirajgaon, Ashti taluka. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition, and her dying statement opened the case like a can of tuna. They bought me like cows and traded me and married me and dumped me, explained to cops, Mahananda, her husband, Balika, the daughter of Tulsapur, and others.
Beed SP justified: This is a poor family gang that targets the vulnerable married women in Pune under the guise of matchmaking. They take money (often drunkards or widowers) of desperate grooms and disappear with the bride. This is a reverse of a previous raid in Pune in 2021 when gangs such as those led by Jyoti Patil procured cheated husbands at weddings however, in this case, it is women who are the auctioned commodities.
Racket’s Ruthless Mechanics
- Agency men visit rural divorcees/widows through social media, temples.
- Auctions in fruggy lodges: Grooms- ask 3-6 lakh on “youth, looks.”
- Fast temple nikaah/shadi, then bride tortured till escape/resale.
- Income laundered to Pune kingpins; there are suspicions of inter-state trafficking.
Family of the victim: Kids, stability, which she had dreamed of. Dignity was sold of her by these monsters. Demonstrations rocked Beed; women activists insist on NIA investigation.
Hadapsar, Katraj is now raided by Pune Police. This way to a wider network, probably, and more victims will rise to the surface, says one of the senior officers. Devendra Fadnavis, CM of Maharashtra ordered fast-track court: “Gender crimes will be tolerated at zero.
