The state of the art semiconductor assembly and test plant of Micron Technology in Sanand, Gujarat inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 2, 2026, is a landmark in India seeking technological independence. The 25,000 direct and indirect jobs will make the plant a global chip hub by placing India in the 75-acre ecosystem of the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT). The ribbon-cutting by Modi was on the global supply chain changes where the US company had decided to move to Gujarat instead of Vietnam and Indonesia.

Micron has its first large foreign semiconductor ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, Packaging) facility in India called Sanand, which is highly automated in producing DRAM and NAND flash memory chips in mobiles, EVs, and data centres. Phase 1 will start off with 1.2 million sq ft cleanrooms growing to 3 million units per day by 2028. It has a production capacity of 10 percent of the world ATMP consumption with an export value of 10 billion a year.
Modi declared it the crown jewel of Atmanirbhar Bharat, and had associations with his India Semiconductor Mission of 10 billion dollars. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel observed that 500 MW of power backup, zero-liquid discharge technology would make things sustainable.
