Kotdwar -In a sickening twist of revenge, Uttarakhand Police accused two gallant locals Deepak Kumar and Vijay Rawat of having the temerity to interfere in a Hindutva frenzy mob demanding that they scrap the baba School Dress signboard of 70-year-old Muslim shopkeeper Vakeel Ahmed. Their stand-off viral video has triggered a wildfire as community heroes are created of the accused men of crime and that the community-like snake-like communal tensions are hitting the hitchhiking Pauri Garhwal streets once considered serene streets.

This was occurring in a simple stall of chai at the Patel Marg. Kumar was a big guy who was a gym instructor and who had a good reputation in the neighbourhood and realised that something wrong had occurred. Bajrang Dal activists had surrounded Ahmed, the pathetic tailor who has been stitching school uniforms to Kotdwar students since 1996. Muslims, they have no right to change or close shop and can only scream about it, with clenched fists, phones running in order to find social media ammunition.
Shaking and rebellious Ahmed took his ledger: this was the name that had kept my family going all these decades–why lark at it now? It is then that Kumar sprang into action. He was a tall person in the group and screamed: Why do you scare a 70-year-old grandfather? Indians also call their teachers Baba, so can he. Law doesn’t discriminate!” But, when they demanded his name, Kumar provided his most catchy reply: Mera nam Mohammad Deepak a slap of Hindu egoism and Muslim patriotism which shocks the audience in the short run.
One of the fellow shopkeepers by the name Vijay Rawat, who was sipping tea in their neighborhood walked in and literally pushed the hecklers off. Cease the play–give the fellow his bread, said he. The unbending Kumar look, the protective shove of Rawat, the mob that voluntarily relinquishes are all the raw electricity of the video which is captured by a bystander. It became viral and it earned millions of views and the hashtag MeraNaamMohammadDeepak was trending throughout the country.

Emboldened by their retreat Ahmed went to Kotdwar Police Station, and pressed criminal hurt with intent under the BNS Sections 115(2), intimidation under 351(2), insult under 352 and trespass under 333 against three identified Bajrang Dal men. The policemen shook their heads in modest inactivity, as in such cases.
Revenge struck swift. The mob attacked 40 or more of their followers to a demonstration in the park accusing Kumar of being an anti-Hindu traitor. A counter-FIR was also filed at night: Rishav Chopra and his followers accused Kumar and Rawat of assault, in door-to-door awareness ride, theft of phones/watches/cash and cast caste insults. Amazingly, the same sections were struck back 115(2), 351(2) even 324 grievous hurt. They are all yet to be arrested and SP Kotdwar promises to equally investigate them with videos.
The endangered Kumar gets out his feelings of frustration: I did not defend religion, but simple human beings. After the livelihood of an old man they were–I was standing. My family are cowering now, BJP netas are throwing flames on protests and the policemen are standing by. Rawat restates: “We had gotten face–truth perverted into attack-tales. Where’s justice?”
