External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar unveiled the logo, theme and website for BRICS 2026, scheduled to take place under India’s chairship. BRICS consists of eleven major emerging markets and developing countries- Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. The theme for India’s BRICS Chairship this year is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, drawing inspiration from Prime Minister’s “Humanity First and People-centric” vision for BRICS.

BRICS grouping

The BRICS grouping was first informally formed during a meeting of the leaders of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) countries on the sidelines of the G8 Outreach Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2006. It was later formalised that year formalised during the 1st BRIC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New York.

  • 2009: The first BRIC Summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
  • 2010: The group became “BRICS”, as South Africa was accepted as a full-time member.
  • 2011: South Africa attended its first BRICS summit in China.
  • 2014: New Development Bank (NDB) was established at the 6th BRICS Summit and the Fortaleza Declaration was also adopted.
  • 2021: The 13th BRICS Summit was held under India’s Chairship in a virtual format.

The logo of BRICS 2026 which is in a form of a lotus with namaste gesture in the centre and four petals, two on each side, symbolises dialogue, inclusivity and shared growth. It blends tradition with modernity, with petals reflecting the vibrant colours of all BRICS members and symbolising collective strength and unity. The “Namaste” gesture in the centre conveys warmth, respect and harmonius collaboration. In essence, the design reflects the broader BRICS vision of cooperation, sustainable development, and global harmony.

India and BRICS

This will be the fourth time India hosts a BRICS Summit. For the first time India hosted 4th BRICS Summit in New Delhi in 2012 under the theme “BRICS Partnership for Global Stability, Security and Prosperity.” The 8th BRICS Summit and India’s second was held in Goa, India in October 2016 under “Building Responsive, Inclusive and Collective Solutions,” theme. The recent 13th BRICS Summit hosted by India was in the year 2021 under the theme, “BRICS @ 15: Intra-BRICS Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation and Consensus.”
