Delhi govt. inaugurates 45 canteens, 55 more to open within 20 days.

On the occasion of 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Government of Delhi on Thursday inaugurated 45 Atal Canteens, which offer full meals at ₹5 to ensure that people eat with dignity. This initiative will benefit the labourers, needy people and families living in slums, aimed at ensuring food security. This scheme is implemented through the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB). The canteens will serve lunch and dinner every day and each canteen is expected to provide around 1,000 meals daily. The opening of Atal Canteens was a part of BJP’s Delhi election manifesto. Around 100,000 people will benefit from the scheme once all the 100 canteens become operational. The meals will include dal, rice, roti and vegetables, according to a government official. The government bears ₹25 cost per plate and beneficiaries will pay ₹5 per meal. At other places, several Cabinet Ministers inaugurated canteens in their respective constituencies whereas, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta along with Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal and Delhi Minister Ashish Sood inaugurated the canteen in Nehru Nagar, New Delhi.

This canteen is open to all on the basis of first come, first served. The meal timings are as follows: lunch from 11.30 am to 2 pm and dinner from 6.30 pm to 9 pm. Through the implementation of this scheme, the spirit of public service is being strengthened.
