The Opposition has submitted a notice to move a no confidence motion on Tuesday against the Lok Sabha (LS) Speaker Om Birla, seeking his from the office. The motion carrying 118 signatures has been submitted to the LS Secretary-General Utpal Kumar Singh. The Congress submitted the motion accusing the Speaker of repeated partisan during the Budget Session. The party said, that the Speaker has denied the Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi the opportunity to speak and ordered the suspension of MPs. The LS Secretariat will now examine the no confidence motion and expedite the process.

The Opposition parties have moved the resolution under Article 94(c) of the Constitution, alleging a “blatantly partisan manner” in the conduct of LS proceedings and stating that Leader of Opposition (LoP) has not been allowed to speak. Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to complete his speech during the Motion of Thanks discussion and eight other MPs were also suspended. The Opposition has asked for allowing the LoP to speak and to reconsider the suspension of eight MPs. There have been frequent disruptions in LS, with Opposition demanding a discussion on the India-US trade deal.

The ruckus in LS began last week when LoP Rahul Gandhi brought up excerpts from “Four Stars of Destiny”, an unpublished book by former Army Chief General MM Narvane on India-China relations. For the first time in 22 years, the Prime Minister of India wasn’t allowed to reply in the LS to the debate on President’s speech.
