A-29-year old man, Mayanglambam Rishikant Singh was shot dead in Manipur’s Churachandpur by unidentified assailants. The whole incident was recorded on camera. He was a resident of Kakchingand and belonged to the Meitei community. Singh was visiting his wife, a Kuki-Zo community member. The video surfaced on late night Wednesday, in which a man can be seen sitting on the ground in the dark. The video carries a message which says, “No peace, no popular government”. The 1-minute, 12-second video doesn’t contain any audio and the man can be seen pleading with folded hands to some people who aren’t visible in the video, until two shots are fired at him.
Singh had been working in Nepal for the past two years recently came to Churachandpur on December 19. He had been staying with his wife since then. Two unidentified people came to their house and took the couple away on Wednesday evening. The wife was let off, but the husband was taken away further and shot dead.
Assam Rifles came to know about the incident through their sources, as no call was made to the police. Following this incident, a joint action committee has been formed in the valley in connection with Singh’s death and demanded that the case be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
