Mumbai gets India’s first musical road on the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road. Special rumble strips have been installed that produce the tune of the Oscar-winning song, ‘Jai Ho’, when motorists drive over them at a designated speed. The 500-metre stretch has been inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his deputy Eknath Shinde on Wednesday. This is fifth such road in the world and first of its kind in India. The stretch has been developed on the northern carriageway between Nariman Point and Worli.

How does the musical road work?

When the vehicles pass over these strips at 60-80 kmph, sound waves are generated by the friction of the wheels allowing the passengers to hear the melody. This concept has been implemented in Hungary, Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates. Signboards have been installed by the BMC at 500 metres, 100 metres and 60 metres ahead of the musical stretch.

Hungarian technology

The concept of musical road in Mumbai is based on Hungarian technology. The concept of Sangeet Marg will be implemented in the near future, said Fadnavis. Mr. Shinde suggested implementing it on a pilot basis on the Samruddhi Expressway that connects Mumbai and Nagpur.
