India A free coaching program for competitive examinations has resulted in a national argument when the general category students were left out and this left millions of deserving young people on the sidelines of the cutthroat competition. Started as an initiative of the Ministry of Social Justice and budgeted with 1200 crore, the scheme is aimed at SC, ST, OBC, and EWS aspirants to UPSC, NEET coaching and JEE coaching – though general category aspirants complain of reverse discrimination.

The program pays up to 3 lakh rupees per student in the empanelled institutes such as Vajiram, ALS, and Allen up to 1.5 lakh slots per year. Priority is given to girls, differently-abled, and weaker sections of the reserved groups in terms of an income cap of Rs 8 lakh. Even when BPL families are used, General category students are given no access even when they clear prelims or achieve 95 percent in boards.
It was introduced after the NEET paper leak fury after the budget 2025 with the intention of increasing the reserved category success rates of 12% in civils to 25%. More than 10 lakh applications were flooded on portals; 38,000 were chosen in Phase 1, in 200 cities.
