The first phase or the houselisting operations (HLO) phase of the Population Census 2027 will be conducted from April 1 to September 30 this year across India, the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RG&CCI) said in a notification on Wednesday. The phase will be conducted in each state over a 30-day period. The self-enumeration option will be available prior to the start of the HLO phase. This will be the first Census enumerate caste in independent India and the first digital census.
Phase II: Population Enumeration
The second phase of the Census would be population enumeration (PE) which will be conducted in February 2027. In this phase, caste identities will be enumerated. The preparatory exercise for the first phase of the Census was conducted from November 10 to 30 last year in selected areas. It asked around 35 questions from the households, including the main cereal consumed, composition of the floor and roof of the house, number of married couples in the house and source of drinking water and cooking fuel.
Around 30 lakh functionaries will be deployed for data collection and supervision of Census operations in India including enumerators, supervisors, master trainers, charge officers, and Principal/District Census Officers.
