Anjel Chakma stabbed to death following racial abuse

In a horrific incident in Dehradun, a 24-year-old boy, named Anjel Chakma was brutally stabbed to death, allegedly triggered by racial abuse. He was an MBA student in a private university in Dehradun from Tripura’s Unakoti district. Anjel was attacked on December 09, 2025 in the Selaqui area of Dehradun while he was out buying groceries with his younger brother Michael Chakma, 21. He died in hospital on December 26, 2025. The police arrested three accused and apprehended two minors on December 14, 2025. The sixth accused, a minor and Nepali national, is believed to have fled to his country.

Unfolding the incident

Anjel and his younger brother were out to buy groceries when they were approached by a group of six unidentified men who allegedly hurled racial slurs at them, calling them “Chinese”, “Chinki”, and “Momo” (derogatory terms often used against people from Northeast India due to their physical features). As per Michael, his brother responded calmly by saying that, “We are Indians and not Chinese. What certificate should we show to prove that? A fight erupted when Michael objected to the slurs, Anjel stepped in to protect his brother, during which he was allegedly stabbed multiple times and beaten with blunt objects. He collapsed on the spot, while the attackers fled. Michael rushed him to Graphic Era Hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to injuries on December 26, 2025. The case has triggered widespread outrage, protests, and calls for justice and institutional reforms.

Arrests

Five of the six accused have been arrested by the Uttarakhand Police on December 14, 2025. While police is still searching the main accused Yagya Awasthi, who’s Nepali national. A reward of Rs 25,000 has been announced for his arrest and along with this, two police teams have been dispatched to track him down and nab him. The accused have been identified as Avinash Negi, 25; Suraj Khwas, 21; Sumit Kumar, 25; Shaurya, 18; Ayush Badoni, 18; and Yagya Awasthi. Protests erupted in Tripura over Anjel’s death. His body was flown to Agartala on Saturday (December 27, 2025). Anjel Chakma’s death has since become a rallying point in Tripura.
